The East End’s Community Housing Fund, powered by a 0.5% real estate transfer tax, has raised over $44 million across East Hampton, Southampton, Southold, and Shelter Island—bolstering efforts to expand housing options for year-round residents.
Southampton leads with $27 million collected, fueling a range of projects including single-family homes, senior rental cottages, and units designed to support essential workers. East Hampton has generated $12 million, with funds allocated toward new construction, site renovations, and down payment assistance for first-time buyers.
Southold is focused on zoning updates and program development, while Shelter Island, having surpassed $1 million, is preparing its first scattered-site housing initiative.
As home prices climb and rental availability shrinks, the fund is helping towns retain the teachers, healthcare workers, tradespeople, and service staff who keep the East End running—strengthening both communities and the local economy.
