Streetscape Design Revealed for Riverhead’s Town Square Revitalization

Downtown Riverhead is on the brink of transformation as plans for the streetscapes portion of the Town Square project come into focus. At a recent work session, the town’s development team unveiled design plans aimed at making Main Street safer, more walkable, and more welcoming for both locals and visitors.

A Vision for a More Vibrant Main Street
The streetscape plan, which stretches from Roanoke Avenue to East Avenue, includes narrowed drive lanes, widened sidewalks, and shortened crosswalks to promote pedestrian safety. New lighting, signage, stormwater management features, and designated outdoor dining and seating zones will help turn the area into a more engaging, people-first environment.

Taking cues from successful revitalizations in Greenport and Westhampton, the design includes activity zones outside storefronts—spaces where café tables, flowerpots, and signage can draw people in. These are complemented by clearly marked pedestrian zones and amenity areas with bike racks, seating, and landscaping.

Connectivity, Safety, and Aesthetic Upgrades
Infrastructure upgrades are a major part of the plan. Utilities like power lines and fiber optics will be buried to enhance reliability and appearance, while new decorative street poles will be added. A HAWK signal for safe pedestrian crossing is slated for installation near the Suffolk Theater, a key centerpiece of the Town Square.

A new parking strategy includes 21 short-term spots on Main Street, time-limited free parking, and a planned 500-space garage off First Street. Artistically lit pedestrian alleyways will connect this garage to Main Street, enhancing access while adding visual interest.

What’s Next
With funding in place from state and federal grants, including a $10 million RAISE grant and $750,000 from the DRI program, the town is preparing to break ground soon. Construction logistics are still being finalized to minimize disruptions to local businesses.

Once complete, the Riverhead Town Square streetscapes will create a more connected, accessible, and attractive downtown—one that’s built to support the community and encourage continued economic growth.
