Riverhead Grants Final Approval for Scott’s Pointe Go-Kart Track

The Riverhead Town Board has granted final site plan approval for the go-kart track and pickleball courts at Scott’s Pointe, despite ongoing regulatory issues tied to the site’s 19-acre lake and a mining permit.

Island Water Park Corp., which operates the Calverton amusement park, was originally required to resolve violations with the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) before receiving final approval. While the mine on the property has yet to be fully reclaimed, the company recently entered into a consent order with the DEC, settling the violations and authorizing use of the lake for recreation while reclamation continues. The agreement includes a compliance schedule and a $186,000 penalty, of which $55,000 must be paid.

Town officials considered the consent order sufficient to meet conditions of the preliminary approval, though some residents criticized the decision, arguing that requirements were not fully met.

The go-kart track and pickleball courts were deemed outside of the mine area and are allowed to operate. Meanwhile, slope revegetation around the lake will continue under DEC oversight until the mining permit is officially closed.

The approval marks another step forward for Scott’s Pointe to continue operations while remediation efforts move ahead.
