Exploring the Future of Art: Eric Haze Brings Creativity to the Metaverse

The boundaries of art and technology continue to blur as the Elaine de Kooning House and the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center have partnered with artist Eric Haze to bring his work into the digital realm. Their latest collaboration — “Eric Haze at the EdeK House: There Are Seven Levels” — takes place entirely in the metaverse, marking a new frontier in how art can be experienced and shared.

The exhibition reimagines the way audiences interact with art. Instead of simply observing paintings or sculptures on walls, visitors navigate through virtual 3D spaces — moving forward, turning corners, and exploring immersive environments that merge fine art, design, and digital innovation. Each of the seven “levels” represents a unique space inspired by Haze’s multidisciplinary career, from graffiti and street art to fashion, graphic design, and painting.

Haze’s artistic journey spans decades and mediums. Starting as a graffiti artist in the 1970s, he went on to shape the visual identity of hip-hop culture, creating designs for the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, and Public Enemy. His influence expanded into streetwear, global branding, and collaborations with Nike, Heineken, and the Brooklyn Nets. The metaverse project now brings all these worlds together, allowing audiences to explore his creative evolution in an entirely new way.

Each digital gallery showcases different facets of Haze’s work — from graffiti-filled caverns and glowing crystal spaces to heart-shaped skylit rooms and interactive installations referencing art legends like Jackson Pollock and James Turrell. The virtual experience is both a tribute to art history and a vision of the future, reflecting how technology can expand the reach of creativity beyond traditional galleries.

Born from the constraints of the pandemic, the project represents a turning point for artists, collectors, and institutions exploring how art can live and breathe in digital form. As curator Chris Byrne noted, these immersive worlds may soon become as legitimate as physical art fairs, redefining the cultural experience for the next generation of art lovers.
