A Historic Gem Revived: Inside Riverhead’s Restored Howell House

Two and a half years ago, downtown Riverhead celebrated the revival of one of its most notable historic homes: the Howell House, a 117-year-old property restored after four years of intensive preservation work. Long vacant before its renovation, the home now expands the hospitality offerings of the Preston House and Hotel, providing guests with a unique blend of Old World character and modern comfort.

Originally built in 1905 for B. Frank Howell—a former Suffolk County National Bank president and three-term Riverhead supervisor—the home has lived many lives. It has served as a private residence, medical office, and legal office before sitting unused for years. The restoration, led by J. Petrocelli Development in collaboration with architect Kelly Shauger of Eave + Arbor Architecture and Design, focused on honoring the building’s past while preparing it for a new chapter.

Unlike the Preston Hotel’s contemporary design, the Howell House embraces early 20th-century style. The interiors feature art-deco influences, rich jewel tones, bold patterns, and curated vintage pieces. Many original elements were preserved—including the staircase, hardwood floors, windows, stonework, and hardware—allowing guests to feel the home’s history as soon as they walk through the door.

The restored property includes five guest accommodations: three king studio suites and a spacious attic suite with two bedrooms, a private living room, kitchen, and full bath. Guests can book individual rooms or reserve the entire house, making it an appealing choice for families, bridal parties, or group getaways.

On the first floor, the home offers elegant communal spaces, including a restored fireplace lounge and a dramatic dining room with art-deco design and velvet seating. A dedicated “parlor room,” complete with full-length mirrors, chaise lounges, and abundant natural light, was created with bridal parties in mind—perfect for getting ready on a wedding day.

While the initial restoration marked a major milestone, the Howell House project continues to evolve. Plans for completing the cellar include restoring the original stonework, flooring, and central fireplace, ultimately transforming the space into a venue for private events.

More than a renovation, the Howell House stands as a thoughtful preservation of Riverhead’s architectural history—beautifully reimagined for modern visitors while maintaining a strong connection to its early 1900s roots.
