In a Montauk dining scene increasingly shaped by large operators, Hooked continues to stand out as a rare, family-owned seafood spot rooted in the local community. Opened in 2018 by longtime Montauk food industry veteran Brian Mooney, the restaurant was built on a simple idea: serve fresh, locally sourced seafood at fair prices, without losing the personal touch that defines small-town hospitality.
After spending more than two decades helping grow the Clam Bar at Napeague, Mooney set out on his own with the support of his wife, Gillian, who previously ran Herb’s Market in Montauk. In recent years, their sons Jack and Cian have joined the operation, making Hooked a true family effort. That sense of continuity carries through the restaurant, creating a welcoming, unpretentious atmosphere that resonates with both locals and returning visitors.
Seafood sourcing is deeply personal at Hooked. Through Mooney’s long-standing ties to the Montauk Fire Department, many of the restaurant’s suppliers are local fishermen he’s known for years. The menu highlights familiar favorites, including an award-winning lobster salad roll and fish and chips made with a batter perfected over three decades.
Despite the challenges of operating independently in Montauk, Hooked has grown steadily each year. Nearly seven years after opening, it remains a reminder of what Montauk does best: local families, local food, and a strong sense of community.
