The Montauk Yacht Club entered a new chapter in 2023 when marina operator Safe Harbor acquired the historic waterfront property from Gurney’s Resorts and restored its original name.
Originally founded more than a century ago, the property had most recently operated as Gurney’s Star Island Resort & Marina after a major renovation investment in 2018. With Safe Harbor’s purchase, the Montauk Yacht Club name returned, signaling a renewed focus on the harbor and the property’s longstanding marina identity.
Today, the Montauk Yacht Club remains the largest marina in Montauk Harbor, offering 219 slips capable of accommodating vessels up to 300 feet. Safe Harbor, which owns and operates more than 130 marinas across the United States and Puerto Rico, has positioned the property as a destination centered on life on the water and easy access to the East End by boat.
Updates introduced under Safe Harbor include electric boat charters, curated excursions to destinations such as Greenport and Shelter Island, and the Safe Harbor Water Suite, a luxury floating accommodation designed for a more immersive harbor experience. Practical improvements, including a retractable roof over the indoor pool and the addition of pickleball courts, were also made.
The property’s restaurants Showfish, Il Forno, and Pool Club have remained in place, while Safe Harbor has emphasized community involvement through employee housing initiatives, local charitable support, and partnerships with nearby businesses.
