Located at 33 East Main Street, Mugs on Main has become a familiar stop in downtown Riverhead, offering a relaxed café setting designed for lingering conversations, casual meetings, and quiet moments with a good cup of coffee.
The café was created by Kasandra Watkins, a certified coffee master with more than a decade of experience in the coffee industry, alongside Jeff Schaeffer, who was already deeply connected to the local business community through Peconic County Brewing. Together, they transformed the former Mambo Grill and Lounge space into a warm, inviting environment that reflects the spirit of a classic neighborhood coffee shop.
Inside, Mugs on Main features a mix of traditional seating, couches, and bar-style spots, along with a rear deck overlooking the riverfront that adds seasonal outdoor seating. The layout was intentionally designed to encourage guests to stay awhile, whether working remotely, reading, or catching up with friends.
The menu centers around thoughtfully crafted coffee and espresso drinks, including a custom house blend developed with a roaster, alongside teas, lemonades, and creative lattes featuring flavors like lavender, honey, cinnamon, and subtle influences inspired by Watkins’ Mexican heritage. Food offerings extend beyond the standard café case, with hot breakfast items, pastries, soups, sandwiches, smoothies, and bowls rounding out the menu.
Community plays an important role at Mugs on Main. The café has collaborated with East End Arts to showcase rotating displays of local artwork and has envisioned the space as one that supports local creatives through music and cultural programming.
Today, Mugs on Main stands as part of downtown Riverhead’s evolving café scene, offering a comfortable, welcoming place that blends quality coffee, thoughtful food, and a strong connection to the local community.
