Nearly three years ago, a significant step was taken toward preserving and revitalizing one of North Sea Harbor’s most storied waterfront landmarks. In early 2023, the North Sea Maritime Center officially became the steward and manager of the historic Tupper Boathouse, signing a 25-year licensing agreement with the Town of Southampton. This partnership marked the beginning of a long-awaited effort to restore the building and transform it into a vibrant hub for maritime education and community engagement.
The nonprofit was created with a clear mission: breathe new life into the 1929–1931 boathouse by establishing a maritime museum, a wooden boat-building program, and hands-on aquaculture and boating education. Planned offerings include everything from local maritime history lessons to sailing instruction and boater-safety programs — all rooted in celebrating and sustaining the East End’s coastal heritage.
The boathouse itself has lived many lives. First a workshop for the Tupper Motorcraft boat company, it later became the Conscience Point nightclub, which drew national attention in 2001 following a high-profile incident. The town purchased the building in 2003 through the Community Preservation Fund, and after Hurricane Sandy damage in 2012, it received critical repairs and elevation work to stabilize the structure.
With stewardship now secured, the North Sea Maritime Center can move forward with fundraising, planning, and restoration. Easton Architects will design the reimagined space, balancing preservation with functionality as it prepares to welcome generations of students, sailors, historians, and community members.
This new chapter positions the Tupper Boathouse not only as a protected relic of Southampton’s past, but as an active, educational, and cultural asset that will anchor the harbor’s future.
