Peconic Bay Medical Center Expands Critical Kidney Care with Advanced Renal Therapy

Two years ago, Peconic Bay Medical Center (PBMC) introduced a major advancement in kidney care for critically ill patients: continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). This addition marked an important step forward in ensuring that residents of eastern Suffolk County have access to life-sustaining renal treatment close to home.

CRRT is a slower, gentler form of dialysis designed specifically for patients who are too unstable to tolerate traditional dialysis sessions. Unlike standard treatments that run only a few hours a day, CRRT works continuously over a 24-hour period, replicating the kidneys’ natural filtering process at a more gradual pace. This makes it an essential option for patients experiencing acute kidney injury in the Intensive Care Unit.

At the time of its launch, PBMC equipped its Corey Critical Care Pavilion with multiple catheter-based dialyzers dedicated to providing this continuous therapy. By adopting CRRT, the hospital reduced the need to transfer critically ill patients to larger facilities, ensuring they could remain close to their families and community while receiving advanced, life-sustaining care.

The introduction of CRRT also reflected PBMC’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to specialized medical technology within Suffolk County. As demand for intensive care services continues to rise, the ability to provide complex renal support locally remains a crucial component of the hospital’s mission to improve outcomes and elevate patient care.
