Suffolk County Expands Open Space Preservation Efforts in Early 2026

Suffolk County’s Department of Economic Development and Planning has started 2026 with meaningful momentum through its Open Space Preservation unit. Early in the year, the county finalized the acquisition of four parcels from the Dittmer Estate, securing land within the South Manorville County Nature Preserve and the Hedges Creek County Wetlands. These purchases were funded through the Suffolk County ¼% Drinking Water Protection Program, reinforcing the county’s commitment to safeguarding both natural habitats and water quality.

The recent acquisitions build on a strong track record. In 2025 alone, the Open Space Preservation unit closed on 19 parcels, preserving more than 144 acres of land. Since 2020, nearly 1,000 acres have been protected through the county’s Open Space Preservation and Farmland Protection programs, ensuring that environmentally sensitive and scenic landscapes remain intact for future generations.

These efforts play a vital role in maintaining Suffolk County’s ecological health, protecting drinking water sources, and preserving the natural beauty that defines the region. By continuing to invest in land conservation, the county supports long-term sustainability for residents and visitors alike, while reinforcing the value of open space as a shared community resource.
