Just before reaching the Montauk Lighthouse, a turn-off leads to Camp Hero State Park, a 415-acre stretch of bluffs, woods, and ocean views that holds one of Long Island’s most compelling military histories. What now feels like a peaceful coastal preserve once served as a strategic defense site during some of the most pivotal moments of the 20th century.
Originally established in the early 1940s as Fort Hero, the base was built to defend the East Coast during World War II. Massive artillery guns were positioned in reinforced concrete bunkers, capable of firing miles out to sea. Machine gun nests and anti-aircraft installations were placed strategically across the bluffs and near the lighthouse, designed to deter potential enemy landings along the shoreline.
After the war, the site transitioned into an Air Force radar installation during the Cold War. The prominent SAGE radar tower, added in 1960, became part of the nation’s early warning defense system, monitoring airspace during a period of heightened global tension. Though no invasion or missile strike ever materialized, Camp Hero played a quiet but critical role in national defense.
When military operations ceased, the property was largely abandoned, leaving behind bunkers, towers, and remnants of infrastructure that slowly blended back into the landscape. Over time, the site became the subject of local lore and speculation, inspiring everything from conspiracy theories to pop culture references. Yet its true history remains grounded in documented military service and coastal defense.
Today, Camp Hero State Park offers visitors a chance to explore trails that wind past concrete fortifications, historic structures, and sweeping ocean vistas. Open to the public since 2002, the park preserves this layered past while providing one of Montauk’s most unique outdoor experiences.
