Riverside Sewer District Marks a Major Step Toward Revitalization

Southampton Town has taken a meaningful step toward long-term revitalization in Riverside with the creation of a local sewer district, a move that community leaders have advocated for over many years. The decision established formal boundaries for properties that will eventually connect to a new sewage treatment plant, laying the groundwork for infrastructure that has long been seen as essential to the hamlet’s future.

The proposed treatment plant is intended to support both environmental and economic goals. By reducing nitrogen runoff, the project aims to improve water quality in the Peconic River and surrounding ecosystems. At the same time, sewer access is expected to unlock redevelopment opportunities that have remained stalled due to the limitations of existing septic systems.

The initial phase of the sewer district includes 237 properties, with plans for future expansion. Funding for the project, estimated at approximately $44.6 million, is largely secured through county, state, and federal grants. While the cost has increased over earlier projections due to rising construction and material expenses, town officials have emphasized that the financial foundation for the project is in place.

The plan has not been without challenges. Some residents have raised concerns related to location, cost, and potential impacts on neighboring communities. Town officials have acknowledged these concerns and indicated that redevelopment projections will be revisited, with a focus on avoiding overdevelopment while still encouraging meaningful economic growth.

With the sewer district now established, Southampton Town is moving into the next phase of engineering and design, followed by contractor selection and construction. While the full timeline spans several years, local leaders and business owners view this milestone as a critical turning point. For Riverside, the sewer project represents infrastructure that could support cleaner water, thoughtful redevelopment, and long-awaited investment in the community.
