On the North Fork, the reopening of Hellenic Snack Bar each February has long signaled that winter is loosening its grip. When the familiar “open” sign lights up in East Marion, locals know another season is beginning. Nearly 50 years after first opening, Hellenic remains one of the North Fork’s true legacy restaurants — a family-owned institution rooted in tradition, resilience and hospitality.

Founded in 1976 by Greek immigrant John Giannaris, Hellenic began as part of Brown’s Cabins on County Road 48. The modest roadside snack bar, with just six stools and a simple menu, was never meant to become a permanent fixture. John’s original goal was to earn enough money to return to Greece full-time with his wife, Anna, and their son, George. In the early days, business was uncertain, and cabin renters often brought their own food from the city. What ultimately drew people in was John’s homemade lemonade and his welcoming presence. Over time, the tiny snack shack grew into a beloved restaurant known for its Greek specialties, fresh ingredients and strong ties to local farms and vineyards.

The Giannaris family’s journey between Greece and East Marion shaped the restaurant’s story. After a brief attempt to split their lives between the two countries, they ultimately returned to the North Fork permanently. George, who began helping at the counter as a child, grew up inside the business and eventually stepped into a leadership role, carrying forward his father’s dedication to hospitality and cooking.

Following John Giannaris’s passing in May 2023, Hellenic entered a new chapter. While honoring its roots, the restaurant has introduced thoughtful updates, including a gelato counter, reflecting continued evolution without losing its identity. Today, Hellenic Snack Bar stands as both a seasonal milestone and a lasting symbol of family, perseverance and the enduring character of the North Fork.
