North Fork Arts Center Revitalizes the Historic Greenport Theater

About two and a half years ago, the historic Greenport Theater entered a new chapter with the creation of the North Fork Arts Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding arts programming across the North Fork. Located on Front Street, the theater, which dates back to 1939, was transformed into a hub for film, live performances and educational programs designed to serve residents of all ages.

The project was made possible through the support of theater owner Josh Sapan, a longtime media executive and Shelter Island resident, who donated the building to establish the center’s permanent home. With that foundation in place, filmmaker Tony Spiridakis helped lead the effort to build the organization and develop programs that would bring together artists, students and community members.

The North Fork Arts Center was designed as a space where creativity could flourish across generations. Programming includes opportunities for students from local high schools such as Greenport, Southold, Mattituck and Shelter Island to participate in theater arts workshops and performance training. The center also offers initiatives that engage senior residents, including storytelling and writing programs that help capture personal histories through creative expression.

Beyond educational programs, the theater has hosted a wide variety of cultural events. Film screenings, comedy performances, dance residencies and guest appearances from figures in film and entertainment have all been part of the vision for the space. The venue also introduced themed film nights and special screenings aimed at serving the diverse communities that make up the North Fork.

The revitalization of the Greenport Theater through the North Fork Arts Center has helped strengthen the region’s cultural landscape while supporting local businesses during the quieter months outside the peak summer season. By combining historic preservation with contemporary arts programming, the center continues to play a growing role in shaping the creative life of the North Fork community.
