Nearly three years after opening its doors, Skye’s Hampton Hair continues to add new energy to downtown Riverhead. Located at 36 West Main Street, the salon transformed the longtime home of Mainstreet Haircutters into a contemporary beauty space while preserving a subtle nod to its history.
When Mainstreet Haircutters closed after more than six decades in business, owner Dakota Skye Thilberg saw opportunity. After years of working in various Hamptons salons and building her clientele, she began searching for a space of her own. The Main Street location immediately stood out. Following a two-month renovation that brought the space down to the studs, Thilberg reimagined it with a modern grey, white and black palette, four stylist chairs and a dedicated mani-pedi area.
The design reflects her personality and creative vision. Music plays a central role in the salon’s atmosphere, and the walls were slated to feature images of iconic artists who inspire her. The focus, however, remains firmly on craftsmanship. Thilberg has emphasized that the salon is about skill, relationships and ensuring clients leave feeling confident.
With 14 years of experience behind the chair, Thilberg built Skye’s Hampton Hair around connection and continued education. Her clientele spans generations, from younger professionals to longtime East End residents. Attention to detail is central to her approach, including her signature reveal moment when clients see their finished look for the first time.
The salon officially celebrated its opening with a ribbon cutting in April 2023, with Thilberg’s young son helping mark the milestone alongside local officials and community supporters. Since then, Skye’s Hampton Hair has remained part of Riverhead’s ongoing revitalization, contributing to the growing vibrancy of Main Street.
As downtown Riverhead continues to evolve, Skye’s Hampton Hair stands as an example of how local entrepreneurs are reshaping familiar spaces into fresh destinations while honoring the past.
