Mitchell Park stands today as the vibrant centerpiece of Greenport Village, but its story begins decades earlier with a beloved waterfront restaurant that once defined the space. In 1941, local businessman Harry Mitchell opened Mitchell’s restaurant along the harbor, transforming a former auto shop into a bustling destination that quickly became a social hub for residents, visitors and boaters alike.
For years, Mitchell’s served as more than just a restaurant. It was a gathering place for community organizations, celebrations and everyday moments, with its marina, large dining room and lively bar drawing crowds from across the region. Its location along the harbor connected it closely to Greenport’s maritime history, welcoming sailors, tourists and locals in equal measure.
After the restaurant was destroyed by fire in 1978, the waterfront site remained vacant for years before the Village of Greenport stepped in. In 1996, the property was purchased and reimagined as a public space designed to reconnect the downtown with the waterfront. The park officially opened in 2001, creating a central gathering place that links Main Street with the marina, ferry and surrounding attractions.
Today, Mitchell Park blends history with community life. Its antique carousel, originally built in the 1920s, has become a defining feature, while the unique camera obscura offers a one-of-a-kind view of the harbor. Seasonal events, from summer concerts to winter ice skating, continue to bring people together in the same spirit that once defined Mitchell’s.
From its origins as a waterfront restaurant to its role today as a lively public park, Mitchell Park remains a place where community, history and everyday moments come together at the center of Greenport Village.
