North Fork Flower Farm (NFFF) has officially fully transitioned into its expansive new barn on Middle Road in Southold, marking a significant operational upgrade for the artisanal grower. What began as a local play on a rented plot in Orient back in 2016 has evolved into a 24-acre powerhouse of specialty cut flowers, with the new timber-frame barn serving as the central hub for production, retail, and events.
The barn itself is a feat of purposeful design, specifically engineered to support the farm’s large-scale flower-drying operation. Architect and partner Kevin Perry designed the structure with a unique ventilation system—controlled by four manual roof ventilators—to ensure the dry, low-light environment necessary to preserve the vibrant colors of over 300 varieties of flowers, herbs, and grasses. The second-floor drying loft and the expanded refrigeration space have effectively tripled the farm’s capacity to keep field-grown blooms fresh and shelf-stable.
For the 2026 season, the barn has transformed NFFF’s business model from a “hoop house” operation into a premier retail destination. The front of the building now serves as a farm stand where visitors can purchase artisanal arrangements or pick up their weekly CSA subscriptions. The interior space also accommodates hands-on workshops, such as the popular “Bouquets & Bubbly” series, allowing the community to engage directly with the floral design process in a professional setting.
The move to the former Moffat Farm property also represents a win for local land preservation. While the farm sits on 24 acres, the development rights for 20 of those acres are protected, ensuring the land remains dedicated to agriculture. The partners have even utilized the barn’s interior to start thousands of seeds in a climate-controlled room as early as January, ensuring a steady supply of anemones, ranunculus, and dahlias throughout the spring and fall.
North Fork Flower Farm is now open for the season, with fresh field-grown bouquets available through mid-November. Whether you are a local resident picking up a Friday subscription or a visitor stopping by for a workshop, the new barn provides a magical, fragrant backdrop to the North Fork’s thriving floral industry.
