A new era of stewardship has begun for one of East Hampton’s most storied landmarks. The Hedges Inn, a historic property listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has been acquired by Andrew and Sarah Wetenhall. As the visionaries behind the award-winning Colony Hotel in Palm Beach and current residents of Sag Harbor, the Wetenhalls bring a proven track record of balancing high-end contemporary luxury with deep historical preservation.
Built in 1873 by John D. Hedges as a wedding gift for his bride, the inn has served as an integral part of the village’s cultural fabric for over 150 years. The acquisition marks the end of more than three decades of dedicated ownership by the Cumming family. In a passing of the torch, John Cumming noted that entrusting the property’s legacy to owners who appreciate the unique charm of East Hampton was of personal importance, stating that the Wetenhall family exceeded those wishes.
The Wetenhalls’ vision for The Hedges focuses on “intuitive hospitality” and a commitment to strengthening community ties. Guests can expect a sophisticated yet comfortable culinary program featuring breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a strategic focus on local farmers and purveyors. In a nod to the nostalgic and somewhat irreverent atmosphere they’ve cultivated at The Colony, the couple plans to introduce signature game nights—including bingo and trivia—to foster a welcoming, community-focused environment.
From a commercial and preservation standpoint, this transition is a significant win for East Hampton Village. The Wetenhalls view the purchase as more than a real estate transaction; it is a commitment to protecting a “true treasure” of the community’s history. By integrating bespoke programming unique to the East End with the beloved amenities that earned The Colony a spot on the Condé Nast Traveller Gold List, the new owners aim to ensure The Hedges remains a premier destination for future generations.
The Hedges Inn is poised to remain a cornerstone of local hospitality, blending its Victorian charm with a fresh, modern sensibility. As the property enters this new chapter, it stands as a testament to the enduring value of historic preservation in the Hamptons’ luxury market.
