When Patty Kaczmarczyk opened Cheese & Spice Market in late 2016, she made history as the very first tenant to welcome customers at the open-air retail village known as the Shoppes at East Wind. Standing in her new storefront at 5768 Route 25, surrounded by several unoccupied units, Kaczmarczyk immediately recognized a missing piece to the neighborhood development. She reached out to her longtime friend and seasoned wine connoisseur, George Eldi, with a simple piece of advice: the complex needed a great wine shop.
Eldi took the suggestion to heart, opening Wines by Nature in July 2017 just steps away from Kaczmarczyk’s shop. The duo first crossed paths years prior in the local restaurant industry while Kaczmarczyk was managing the nearby French-American restaurant La Plage and Eldi was serving as a wine representative. Transitioning from hospitality colleagues to neighboring business owners, they have spent nearly a decade transforming their corner of Wading River into a unified destination for fine food and exceptional drink.
Ever since the launch of the wine shop, the two owners have operated with a philosophy of mutual support and shared community growth. Rather than competing, they actively cross-promote on social media and regularly send clients across the walkway to complete their dinner party menus. Both storefronts share a core mission of sourcing high-quality, artisanal products from global makers while keeping the price points attainable for everyday East End shoppers.
The ultimate expression of their professional partnership comes alive through their popular, collaborative educational seminars. Hosted two to three times a year inside Wines by Nature, these public cheese and wine pairing classes are designed to broaden local palates and take the pretense out of tasting. By combining Kaczmarczyk’s deep knowledge of gourmet cheeses and imported spices with Eldi’s curated selection of natural and global wines, the events offer an elevated, interactive experience that has built a fiercely loyal following in the community.
