Hidden Harvest: Inside Cutchogue’s Low-Profile Wine Speakeasy

Tucked inside a red-brick commercial plaza off Cox Lane in Cutchogue, an unpretentious wooden door marks the entrance to one of the North Fork’s most unconventional wine experiences. North Cliff Vineyards skips the sprawling tasting rooms and manicured lawn aesthetics common to the region, operating instead as a low-profile, warehouse-style tasting hub. Opening its doors just once a week on Sundays from noon to 5:00 PM, owner Edmund Power has embraced a clever “speakeasy” format to build a distinct, face-to-face destination for curious local connoisseurs.

Stepping past the nondescript front office situated between a neighboring cheerleading school and a home remodeling business, visitors enter a dimly lit industrial space featuring a dark wood bar, concrete floors, and seating for about 25 guests. The minimalist setting shifts the focus entirely toward direct interaction and education. Because Power personally manages his 20-acre Mattituck farm and hand-crafts the inventory alongside a single employee, guests are served directly by the winemaker, turning a standard afternoon tasting into an engaging, community-driven social hour.

The production side of the operation is rooted entirely in traditional, Old World methodologies. Focusing strictly on red Bordeaux grapes, the vineyard relies on nonmechanized labor, hand-harvesting, and natural fermentation without relying on chemical herbicides or added sulfur. The grapes move straight through the warehouse garage doors into a wall-mounted destemmer, eventually aging in heavily charred, 53-gallon bourbon barrels shipped directly from Kentucky. This custom process yields a highly unique, bourbon-barrel-aged Merlot that delivers a distinct sweet oak flavor profile unmatched on the local circuit.

By intentional design, the small-scale storefront avoids mass production and large tour crowds, offering complimentary tastings that evoke the early, experimental days of the East End wine movement. Moving through the current 2026 season, the industrial space continues to preserve a truly local flavor, proving that a passion-driven business model can carve out a successful, highly watched niche right alongside the biggest names on the South and North Forks.
