A major cultural transformation has been finalized in downtown Riverhead. Ownership of the landmark 144-year-old Vail-Leavitt Music Hall has officially transferred from the Town of Riverhead to The Jazz Loft, a Stony Brook-based nonprofit. The closing wraps up a multi-year municipal effort to transition the historic performing arts venue into capable hands that can spearhead its preservation and revitalize the local arts scene.
The road to the sale involved a complex regulatory process over the last few years. The town originally stepped in to recover the asset from its previous operational council under a deed reverter clause. After regainining control of the theater, the Town Board advanced a strategic plan to find a dedicated operator. This culminated in a final $150,000 contract of sale signed late last year, paving the way for the official transfer to the renowned jazz preservation and educational organization.
Led by founder and president Thomas Manuel, The Jazz Loft team is preparing to jump directly into the restoration process. Initial infrastructure priorities will focus on critical structural updates, including comprehensive roof repairs and modern HVAC overhauls. Rather than waiting for the entire multi-phase renovation to conclude, the nonprofit aims to safely activate the theater for community gatherings and interim programming while the preservation work continues.
Local officials view the acquisition as a major victory for downtown economic development. By transforming the historic treasure into a bustling hub for big band, swing, jazz, and classic live performances, the venue is poised to draw consistent foot traffic directly to local restaurants and shops.
