Southampton Town has officially expanded its network of protected coastal ecosystems following the $2 million acquisition of a waterfront tract located along Squires Pond in Hampton Bays. Financed through the municipal Community Preservation Fund (CPF), the multi-year land protection effort transforms a developed residential property into a permanent wetlands sanctuary and wildlife transit corridor.
To satisfy the environmental criteria set forth by the town’s land acquisition program, the parcel underwent a comprehensive site restoration process prior to closing. Under the direction of local permit and land-use consultants, existing residential structures were systematically demolished and cleared, returning the ecologically sensitive waterfront soil to a pristine, undeveloped state.
By linking this newly cleared acreage with adjoining town-held conservation lands, the transaction locks in vital buffer zone protection for the Squires Pond estuary. The acquisition ensures permanent public preservation of coastal marine habitats while honoring the long-standing local environmental stewardship legacy of the site’s previous owners.
