A cornerstone of North Fork heritage is transitioning into a vibrant center for progressive education following the $2.85 million sale of the former Sacred Heart Catholic Church property. Situated on 10.2 acres along Main Road in Cutchogue, the historic multi-building complex—originally constructed by 19th-century European farm families—has officially been secured as the permanent home for Peconic Community School (PCS).
Rather than facing commercial redevelopment or demolition, the mid-1800s architectural site will be preserved through adaptive reuse. Having leased the grounds for two years, the independent non-profit institution will maintain the structural integrity of the main church, rectory, carriage house, and former academy buildings. Future master plans include reimagining the historic church into a community performing arts center, converting the carriage house into an interactive maker studio, and integrating the surrounding acreage into hands-on environmental education programs.
By grounding its curriculum in place-based learning and environmental stewardship, the school ensures that the craftsmanship of early local builders remains a living part of the community. The transaction safeguards acres of open space and public trail networks, seamlessly blending historic preservation with the future of North Fork youth education.
