East Hampton Town has completed a targeted infrastructure and streetscape enhancement along the southern side of Main Street in Amagansett. Spanning the corridor between Hedges Lane and the western entrance of Amagansett Square, the state-grant-funded project was finished ahead of the busy summer season to improve pedestrian mobility, support accessibility standards, and streamline foot traffic flow through the hamlet.
The completed scope of work expanded the main sidewalk width from four to five feet to better accommodate pedestrian traffic and eliminate former tripping hazards caused by uneven terrain. To resolve long-standing soil erosion along high-traffic stretches, crews replaced the narrow, worn grass medians with a durable brick border that matches the established aesthetic of the northern curb. Additionally, mature trees along the southern walkway are now enclosed in protective six-by-six-foot timber planter frames, unifying the streetscape with surrounding commercial blocks.
While municipal leaders prioritized the functional necessity of durable paving to withstand heavy seasonal foot traffic and facilitate winter maintenance, the project sparked thoughtful dialogue among residents regarding historic aesthetics and greenspace retention in the historic district. Completed ahead of Memorial Day weekend, the updated walkway now provides a safer, more uniform, and highly functional thoroughfare for everyday residents and summer visitors alike.
