Design plans for a comprehensive renovation and expansion of the nearly century-old Montauk School have officially been presented to the local school board and community. Developed by BBS Architects following voter approval of a $34 million capital improvement bond, the architectural vision seamlessly bridges the campus’s original structural heritage with modern educational spaces, taking visual inspiration from historic local landmarks such as the Montauk Playhouse and Montauk Manor.

The core of the capital project features a brand-new, full-sized gymnasium overlooking the athletic fields, complete with elevator access, ADA-compliant restrooms, and updated secondary entrances. Inside the existing building footprint, the current gym space will be repurposed into a multipurpose performance venue for music programs, school assemblies, and dining. Additional project highlights include an expanded library, upgraded classroom capacity, added administrative restrooms, and the long-awaited removal of exterior modular classroom units installed decades ago.

With architectural renderings completed, school administrators are advancing through the preliminary planning phase, including staff consultations and construction management firm selection. Municipal submissions to the New York State Education Department are planned for late summer, with project bidding set for late autumn. Initial site preparation is projected for late 2026, paving the way for primary construction to run through summer 2027 with an anticipated completion ahead of the 2028–2029 academic year.
