Indian Island Honored for Shoreline Restoration Excellence

Indian Island County Park in Riverhead has received national recognition for its innovative and environmentally sensitive shoreline restoration project. The American Shore and Beach Preservation Association awarded Suffolk County the Best Restored Shoreline Award, highlighting the park’s successful efforts to address erosion, restore habitat, and protect cultural heritage.

The project was designed by D&B Engineers and Architects and constructed by Gavin Bros/Madhue Contracting, JV. Work focused on stabilizing eroding bluffs, reestablishing tidal marshlands, and enhancing the natural environment with native plantings. Beyond ecological benefits, the initiative also safeguarded a significant Native American burial site, ensuring that cultural heritage was preserved alongside environmental restoration.

Indian Island County Park now stands as a model for coastal resilience, blending shoreline protection with public access and recreational opportunities. The effort brought together local government, state and federal regulators, tribal representatives, and private partners, demonstrating how collaboration can deliver long-lasting community and environmental impact.

This recognition underscores the importance of projects that balance conservation, recreation, and heritage, setting an example for future shoreline restoration across Long Island and beyond.
